What is yoga?

Yoga was developed up to 5,000 years ago in India as a comprehensive system for wellbeing on all levels: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. While Yoga is often equated with Hatha Yoga, the well-known system of postures and breathing techniques, Hatha Yoga is only a part of the overall discipline of Yoga. Today, many millions of people use various aspects of Yoga to help raise their quality of life in such diverse areas as fitness, stress relief, wellness, vitality, mental clarity, healing, peace of mind and spiritual growth. While there are more than 100 different types, or schools, of yoga, most sessions typically include breathing exercises, meditation, and assuming postures (sometimes called asana or poses) that stretch and flex various muscle groups.

Yoga is a system, not of beliefs, but of techniques and guidance for enriched living. Among Yoga’s many source texts, the two best known are the Yoga Sutras and the Bhagavad Gita. Both explain the nature of—and obstacles to—higher awareness and fulfillment, as well as a variety of methods for attaining those goals.

What is yoga
Benefits

A regular yoga practice can provide physical and mental health benefits.

Physical Benefits

The relaxation techniques incorporated in yoga can lessen chronic pain, such as lower back pain, arthritis, headaches and carpal tunnel syndrome. Yoga can also lower blood pressure and reduce insomnia. Other physical benefits of yoga include:

  • Increased flexibility

  • Increased muscle strength and tone

  • Improved respiration, energy and vitality

  • Maintaining a balanced metabolism

  • Weight reduction

  • Cardio and circulatory health

  • Improved athletic performance

  • Protection from injury

Mental benefits

Aside from the physical benefits, one of the best benefits of yoga is how it helps a person manage stress and provide peace and tranquility in your daily life.  Yoga’s incorporation of meditation and breathing can help improve a person’s mental well-being. A regular yoga practice can create mental clarity and calmness, increase body awareness, relieve chronic stress, relaxes the mind, centers attention, and sharpens concentration.

What can I expect in a typical Everliving yoga class?

At Everliving you can be reassured that you will find peace and relaxation. All of our classes are tuned in to the needs of who arrives that day. This isn't just an hour to us or even just yoga, to us this is our life. We may bring in essential oils, fun music, or even cards.  Our classes are tuned in, fresh and always rejuvenating.

What to expect

Let's get started!

  • Arrive 15 minutes early for your first class. No need to feel rushed, this will give you time to fill out the registration forms and get the lay of the land.

  • Hydrate before you arrive. We cannot emphasize this enough. You are going to sweat, and your body needs to arrive hydrated. Drink plenty of water (and why not throw in some electrolytes?!) at least 45 minutes before class.

  • Do not eat 2 hours before class. Your body does not want to be digesting food while doing yoga.

  • Bring a yoga mat, large towel, and water bottle. Don’t have these things? Don’t worry, have mats and towels you can borrow, and have water for sale.

  • Wear clothing you feel comfortable bending over and lifting your legs in.  Men: swim trunks work great. Women: any type of fitness clothing, running shorts, stretchy pants, tank tops… whatever you are comfortable in.

  • Use the bathroom before class and commit to staying in the room for the entire class. Going from the hot room to the cool lobby and back can really work against you. This is yoga practice, not final exam. Be kind to yourself. Back off the intensity of effort. Sit on your mat if you need a break but, try to stay in the room. Not only will it serve your practice better, but the yogis around you will thank you.

  • Tell your instructor about injuries or concerns you have before class. We are here to help you heal, but we have no idea how you feel. If you are recently out of surgery or illness, we require that you have received clearance from your treating physician before starting any practice. Please contact us at if you have any questions about this.

  • Grab a friend! You will never forget the person you went to your first Hot Yoga class with! It makes for great stories later.

  • Come with an open mind and a good dose of humor. You will be amazed at what you find. We can’t wait to meet you!

  • We have showers equipped with soaps and shampoo, hairdryers and towels for your convenience.
